Which Apple products are due for an update?

Katie Morroni

Many of the most common questions we get from our clients and friends relate to Apple speculation and recommendations. So when I saw the Gizmodo post, The Apple Products Most Overdue For an Update, I immediately emailed our two resident Apple gurus to get their insights as to what we might expect at the Oct. 16th Apple event.

Cecily: iPads are a given, because Apple historically holds an iPad event in October. I think they will follow a similar design trend to the iPhone 6 family -- with more rounded edges, faster processor, etc.

Rob: Totally agreed.  New iPads are coming.  I’ll be curious to see if the edges/ronudness match the iPhone, though it would be cool.  I suspect A8X processors (slightly more powerful than what’s in the iPhones), Touch ID home buttons, Apple Pay integration and better cameras.  A lot of places are predicting a larger RAM complement to the processor (much faster) and a gold option… ;-)

I think the iMac and Thunderbolt display are next up surprisingly.  Rumors are swirling about a retina iMac and I would think a matching display is coming too to go with the added capabilities of new MacBook Pros (from a few months ago) and the Mac Pro.  These are sorely in need of something compelling.

Cecily: Eh, I would group the Mac Mini, Mac Pro, and display into the same category, and I don’t think we will see them at this event. Apple can sell those throughout the year without much effort (meaning when your computer dies, you get another one), but the Apple TV benefits from the holiday shopping season (if your Apple TV dies, you can likely live without it and won’t necessarily get a new one right away). A hardware update for the Apple TV is overdue, and they make good corporate holiday gifts, so it would be in their best interest to have a new model ready for the holiday rush.

Rob: Yeah, the more I think about it, the more an Apple TV/Mac mini might be more possible than the iMac/display update.  SOMETHING has to happen here because both products are long for an update to compete better with other products.  Would love to see an Apple TV with more features that extend your iPhone… almost like the reverse of what the watch will be to the iPhone.  And I think the next Mac mini is going to be more Apple TV sized… they need to ditch the hard drive and go SSD. Plus, the current design was still made to accommodate an optical drive.  WILL BE VERY INTERESTING to see what happens with this.

iOS8.1 will DEFINITELY get talked about too… Apple Pay implementation will be a big thing. But I think MacPro updates will be reserved for 2015, along with the iPad Pro. ;-)
